Jadon Johnson Ms. Lehmann English 1-3 20 September 2018 Summary of “Rituals of Memory” Kimberly Blaeser’s essay, “Rituals of Memory,” argues that we always come back to our roots. Blaeser begins her essay with a metaphor that shows readers her opinion about how relationships to family and community work. She uses her memories of the legionnaires as evidence for her claim. She also mentions that she lives two lives. Her two lives are her Native American education and her Catholic School. The two lives are different but both define who she is. Blaeser ends the essay by writing that our stories and memories make us who we are.
Jadon Johnson Ms. Lehmann English 1-3 20 September 2018 Summary of “Night Calls” Lisa Fugard wrote a short story called “Night Calls.” The story is about a father and daughter whose relationship isn’t very good at the start. It isn’t good because the girl’s mother died, so she is sent to boarding school. Her father almost moves, but he reconsiders when he is put in charge of a rare heron, which gives the father hope. Their relationship gets better. The hope doesn’t last long, though because the heron gets out of its cage and is eaten by a snake. The daughter mimick’s the bird’s calls to save their relationship.
Jadon Johnson Ms. Lehmann English 1-3 19 September 2018 Summary of “Once Upon A Time” In "Once Upon A Time," Nadine Gordimer writes a short story about the risk in being too secure. Gordimer couldn’t sleep because she was startled awake by sounds in her house that made her fear for her life, leading her to tell a story about fear and protection. She begins her story by introducing a mom, a dad, and a son who lives in an upper class suburb with nearby riots and segregation. Over time, crime rises in the suburb so the family gets more security, even adding a razor wire topped wall around their house. The story ends when their boy goes out to play, gets caught in the razor wire, cutting himself.
Summary Reflection 1. List one thing you’ve learned from writing this paper that you can apply to other writing assignments. What will that look like? I learned the steps of writing the summary. I won’t be lost next time I write a summary.
2. Identify a specific revision you were asked to make and explain why (this can be at any stage of the writing process). How did you revise? What did you learn? I was asked to make a transition between paragraphs. I looked at the last and first sentence of each paragraph and said something that made sense between them. I learned that it makes more sense if it has a transition.
3. What are the conventions of a summary and how did you meet those in this assignment? The conventions of a summary are including the author, title, genre, and big idea in the first sentence of the summary. I did this in every summary paragraph. I also put the main points in chronological order because that is a convention, and I didn’t include any opinions. I did this in all of my summaries.
4. Given more time to work on this assignment, how would you improve it? I would’ve probably made it longer or at least tried.
5. What is one thing you’re proud of in this paper? I think I did the best on "Rituals of Memory" because it flows the best throughout the paragraph.
